As the 83rd Oregon Legislative Session approaches its end, several employment-related bills are still in play, and they could carry significant implications for businesses across the state. While none have been signed into law yet, the momentum behind them makes this a critical time for employers to pay attention and speak up. Three proposals—SB 916, HB 2957, and SB 426—stand out for their potential to reshape the employer-employee landscape, increase litigation exposure, and raise costs across industries. SB 916 would allow striking workers to collect unemployment benefits for up to 26 weeks, a move that could shift financial burdens from unions to employers and incentivize longer or more frequent strikes. Oregon would become one of just four states that allow workers on strike to collect unemployment benefits. HB 2957 eliminates the 90-day window to sue after a BOLI complaint is dismissed, allowing employees to wait up to the full five-year statutory…

[A new Cato Institute study by David Bier presents the most extensive available evidence on these points.] A prison guard transfers Alien Enemies Act deportees from the U.S., alleged to be Venezuelan gang members, to the Terrorism Confinement Center in Tecoluca, El Salvador. Mar. 16, 2025 (El Salvador Presidential Press Office) An important new study by my Cato Institute colleague David Bier shows that most of the Venezuelan migrants deported to imprisonment in El Salvador had no criminal records, and many (perhaps a majority) entered the US legally. This makes the Trump Administration's actions even more reprehensible. Here is an excerpt: Shortly after the US government illegally and unconstitutionally transported about 240 Venezuelans to be imprisoned in El Salvador's horrific "terrorism" prison on March 15, CBS News published their names. A subsequent CBS News investigation found that 75 percent of the men on that list had no criminal record in…

The Internal Revenue Service was aware of significant underreporting of cryptocurrency on tax returns and used one of its investigative tools (i.e., a John Doe summons) in 2016 to seek financial information on thousands of individuals, including James Harper. Harper sued in 2020, alleging unlawful access to his private financial information, and has been embroiled in litigation since then and is now seeking relief from the Supreme Court of the United States. Harper’s case against the IRS has brought significant attention to the issue of financial privacy in the digital age. Harper’s petition to the Supreme Court challenges the IRS’s warrantless seizure of his cryptocurrency transaction records from Coinbase, arguing that this action violates the Fourth Amendment. The case also raises critical questions about financial privacy rights for individuals as banking and financial services digitize more services and request sensitive financial data. Individuals,…

Located in northwest Indiana, LaPorte County borders Lake Michigan with its largest municipality, Michigan City, a mere 58 miles east of Chicago, Illinois. French explorers and fur traders came to the area in the 19th Century, naming the county for the welcomed trail created by the Pottawatomie tribe, which allowed ease of travel from the dense Indiana forests to the neighboring prairie: “LaPorte” meaning “the door” in French. Truck Routes in LaPorte County Today, transportation concerns have changed from the fur trading of the 1800s to the robust trucking and rail industries that serve the nation and the world here in LaPorte and the “Crossroads of America.” Truck, rail, and port coordination Trucking in LaPorte County coordinates with the many railroad companies operating here, including the Canadian National Railway; Chesapeake and Indiana Railroad; Chicago, Fort Wayne and Eastern Railroad; Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad; CSX…

Charter Communications Inc. and Cox Communications Inc. have announced a plan to merge in a $34.5 billion deal. The transaction would create the nation’s largest cable operator, surpassing Comcast, with approximately 38 million subscribers across 46 states. Predictably, the proposal triggered concerns about cable-industry consolidation. Yet the reflexive anxiety about “big cable getting bigger” misses the economic realities of today’s communications marketplace. A regulatory review of this merger deserves a clear-eyed analysis based on sound economic principles, rather than outdated regulatory frameworks or political agendas. Today’s Multi-Platform Reality To understand this merger’s competitive significance, it should be noted that the term “cable operator” has become increasingly meaningless. Indeed, the communications landscape of 2025 bears little resemblance to the era when most regulatory frameworks governing the…
Telia Mary U. Williams (Northern Illinois University College of Law) has posted Sola Scriptura and the Magisterium: Reconciling Two Biblical Analogues of Constitutional Interpretation Through a Judicial Hermeneutic of Storytelling on SSRN. Here is the abstract: The validity of the two predominant methods of interpreting the U.S. Constitution has been long and hotly debated. Both of these methods— originalism and living constitutionalism—draw their force from hermeneutics, or methodological principles of interpretation that commonly assist readers of scriptural texts. These divergent constitutional hermeneutic approaches ultimately treat the Constitution as a civic scriptural or holy text, and the multiplicity of interpretations that result from them, largely derive from one of two principal scriptural or Biblical hermeneutical approaches. Indeed, the two principal approaches to constitutional interpretation map onto one of either “sola Scriptura” or…
The Trump administration notified the Supreme Court on Monday that it will not defend a federal campaign finance law that restricts the amount of money that political parties can spend in coordination with a candidate for office. In a brief responding to a petition for review filed by the NRSC, U.S. Solicitor General D. John Sauer told the court that although the Department of Justice “has a longstanding policy of defending challenged federal statutes,” it has “determined that this is the rare case that warrants an exception to that general approach.” The justices are likely to act on the case before their summer recess. If, as seems likely, they grant the NRSC’s petition for review, they could hear argument in the case in the fall, with a decision to follow sometime in 2026. The lawsuit now before the court was filed in 2022 by then-Sen. (and now Vice President) J.D. Vance, along with former Rep. Steve Chabot, a Republican from Ohio.…

The incident, which occurred Sunday afternoon around 4 p.m. along the 500 block of West Sonora Street, has raised concerns about driver impairment and pedestrian safety in the area. Details of the Incident According to the Stockton Police Department, the 62-year-old male driver was found unconscious in the vehicle following the collision. All five pedestrians who were struck sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Police have stated that while their investigation is ongoing, driving under the influence (DUI) is being considered as a possible factor in the collision. No Malicious Intent Suspected Authorities have clarified that, based on…
