Look, if you had one shot, or one opportunity, to seize everything you ever wanted [from Meta], would you capture it, or just let it slip? Faced with that opportunity, Eminem’s publishing company has opted for the “sue the hell out of Meta” route. You may have heard some of Eminem’s music (hopefully the pre-2009 cuts) on the apps you have your thumb glued to. That in itself isn’t surprising — he’s the top-selling rapper of all time, after all. But using his music without at least asking his permission first is begging for a wake-up call. US Magazine has coverage: Eminem filed a lawsuit against Meta Platforms — owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp — over allegations of copyright infringement. The rapper’s publishing company Eight Mile Style has accused Meta of putting Eminem’s music on its Reels Remix and Original Audio platforms without permission. A lawsuit filed on Friday, May 30, in Michigan is…
A book on The New Relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union was recently published. The book is edited by Dr. Emmanuel Guinchard (Liverpool John Moores University) and Prof. Carlo Panara (University of Leicester) and may be accessed here. Overview Covers the whole spectrum of the new relationship between the UK and the EU Contains original discussion and evaluations of the impact of Brexit on UK sovereignty Includes both topics covered in the recent agreements and topics that have been left in a grey area About the book Brexit has reshuffled the cards of the relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union. It is a once in a lifetime event, which ended nearly 50 years of EU Membership. EU law as such no longer applies in the United Kingdom and British citizens and companies no longer benefit from its advantages. Part of the previous regime has however been maintained (at times with amendments) through the series of treaties negotiated between…
Yesterday afternoon, Rise and Resist, a nonprofit group dedicated to opposing government acts that “threaten[] democracy, equality, and our civil liberties,” took a break from its weekly “cowardly law firm crawl” to gather outside the offices of some of the firms that have fought against the Trump administration’s unlawful executive orders — and won — to celebrate their courageousness. If you recall, RAR previously demonstrated against Biglaw firms’ cowardice. Specifically, because “real lawyers don’t give in without a fight,” RAR rallied against the nine law firms — Paul Weiss; Skadden; Willkie Farr; Milbank; Kirkland & Ellis; Latham & Watkins; Simpson Thacher; A&O Shearman; and Cadwalader — that capitulated to Trump and signed pro bono payola deals that would forever stain their legacies. Here are some photos from the…
For over 20 years, Real Lawyers Have Blogs has explored how lawyers use publishing to build relationships, grow their business and share their expertise with the world. In that time, I’ve spoken with thousands of legal professionals, marketers and technologists who care about the same thing I do—how we can help lawyers get better at sharing their insight, commentary and story. The Real Lawyers podcast is a new extension of that conversation. Each week, I’ll sit down with a guest who has a unique perspective on legal publishing—whether they’re driving innovation, studying industry trends or just rolling up their sleeves and doing the work. We kick off with John Corey, co-founder of Greentarget—a strategic communications firm that has shaped the voice of thought leadership in the legal industry for two decades. Few have done more to elevate law firm publishing and earned media as a discipline rooted in trust, expertise, and…
A serious motorcycle accident on Douglas Boulevard in Granite Bay has left one rider hospitalized with significant injuries, highlighting the ongoing safety concerns for motorcyclists on busy California roadways. The Monday afternoon collision between a BMW SUV and a Yamaha motorcycle is a stark reminder of motorcyclists’ vulnerability when sharing the road with larger vehicles. Details of the Douglas Boulevard Accident The collision occurred on eastbound Douglas Boulevard near Granite Estates Drive at approximately 1:20 p.m. on June 2nd, 2025. According to California Highway Patrol reports, a white BMW SUV collided with a red and black 2015 Yamaha YZF-R3 motorcycle. The impact was severe enough that both vehicles came to rest, blocking multiple lanes of traffic, creating a significant hazard for another motorist, and requiring immediate emergency response. South Placer Fire paramedics arrived quickly at the scene alongside CHP officers. The motorcyclist sustained…

In January 2025, the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld an injunction issued by a Texas federal district court barring enforcement of a 2022 Guidance Document and related Letter on emergency abortion care issued by the Department of Health and Human Services. HHS had taken the position that under the Emergency Medical Treatment & Labor Act, emergency rooms must sometimes perform abortions as a method of stabilizing pregnant women who have pregnancy complications. HHS also took the position that this federal requirement pre-empts Texas laws barring abortions. The 5th Circuit concluded that EMTALA requires hospitals to stabilize both the pregnant woman and her unborn child and that doctors must comply with state law in balancing those obligations. (See prior posting.) On May 29, 2025, HHS placed a statement on the 2022 Guidance Document that it was being rescinded. However, it went on to apparently limit the rescission to plaintiffs in the 5th…
By now, many businesses are familiar with The Campaign Registry (or “TCR”). The Campaign Registry was created as a collaboration between major United States mobile telecommunications carriers to address the growing issue of consumers receiving unwanted text messages. To be clear, The Campaign Registry is not operated by a federal authority. Rather it functions entirely as a collaboration between mobile carriers, virtual phone service providers (“service providers”), and businesses sending Application-to-Person (“A2P”) SMS messages. As a result, the registration process continues to dramatically evolve, with some of the more daunting requirements implemented over the past few months. Understandably, many business owners have become frustrated with The Campaign Registry process. History of The Campaign Registry The Campaign Registry was created by major United States mobile carriers, including AT&T,…

Being arrested for domestic violence in Broward County can turn your world upside down in an instant. But here’s something many people don’t realize: an arrest doesn’t automatically mean you’ll face criminal charges. Understanding how the charging process works—and when charges can be dropped—is important when your freedom and future is at stake. The Reality Behind Domestic Violence Arrests vs. Charges In Florida, domestic violence isn’t a standalone crime but rather an enhancement that applies to various offenses when they occur between family or household members. Under Florida Statute § 741.28, domestic violence can include actions such as assault, battery, sexual assault, stalking, kidnapping, or any criminal offense resulting in physical injury or death when committed by one family or household member against another. When law enforcement responds to a domestic violence call in Broward County, they often make arrests based on…
The recent Newsweek article, White-Collar Jobs Are Disappearing, outlines a disturbing trend in the United States: the disappearance of well-paying, white-collar jobs once considered stable. Driven by automation, artificial intelligence, and cost-cutting measures, many U.S. employees are finding themselves abruptly terminated with little recourse. This shift underscores an important contrast between the American and Canadian employment law landscapes—particularly in Ontario, where employees benefit from significantly greater legal protections. Understanding Ontario Employment Protections In the U.S., employers can generally terminate employees at any time, for any reason, and without notice, unless contractual terms or specific laws say otherwise. In Ontario, employers must provide reasonable notice or pay in lieu of notice when terminating an employee without cause. Pursuant to the Employment Standards Act, 2000 (ESA), the statutory minimums depend on the…
For decades, the gravitational center of the U.S. Supreme Court could be pinpointed to a single seat. Justice Anthony Kennedy famously occupied that role—casting pivotal votes on same-sex marriage, affirmative action, campaign finance, and capital punishment. His jurisprudence wasn’t always consistent, but it was often decisive. With his retirement, and the appointments of Justices Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett, the Court adopted a solid 6–3 conservative majority. Many observers concluded the swing vote had vanished—an artifact of a bygone era of ideological balance. But the story doesn’t end there. In this article, I analyze all 104 closely divided Supreme Court decisions from 2020 onward—the Barrett era—each decided by either a 5–4 or 6–3 vote. The question: does a swing justice still exist? If so, who fills that role? And just as critically—does swing behavior depend on the kind of case? To…
Divorcing your spouse is a lot more complex than breaking up with your boyfriend/girlfriend, both legally and emotionally. Ultimately, Texas will not force spouses to stay together if even one of them wants to leave the marriage. Even though a spouse who is unwilling to divorce cannot stop a divorce from happening, they can add considerable complexity to the process. Texas divorce law basics Like every other state, Texas is a no-fault divorce state, in the sense that you can get a divorce without proving fault on the part of the other spouse. Unlike 17 states, Texas does allow a spouse to assert fault-based grounds for divorce; it’s just that this is optional. Insupportability Insupportability is the most common ground of divorce in Texas. Don’t be misled by this term — insupportability is also known as “irreconcilable differences.” It allows you to get a divorce, even over your spouse’s objections, without providing any specific…
