What the Marriage Equality Backlash Taught Me About the Fight for Trans Rights

On June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court ruled that excluding same-sex couples from civil marriage was unconstitutional. I was outside the Supreme Court that day, celebrating the advocacy achievement that seemed impossible a decade prior when bans on marriage for same-sex couples passed by wide margins in state after state. Couples, families, and advocates gathered on the steps outside the court, singing, crying, and embracing. I thought about my younger self who could not have imagined a life and future as a queer adult, and about the generations of LGBTQ people who came before me and faced so many more obstacles to realizing their own queer adulthoods. Though the fight for legal recognition of marriage for same-sex couples spanned decades, the final stages of progress seemed lightning fast for many people outside of the LGBTQ legal movement. In June of 2013, the Supreme Court held in United States v. Windsor that the federal law defining marriage as between one man and one woman…

128. A Look at the Semi vs. Bike Crash at St. John Ave. and N. Topping Ave. in Kansas City, MO

On Sunday afternoon, a bicyclist was killed in a collision with a semi-truck at the intersection of St. John Avenue and North Topping Avenue in northeast Kansas City. Police say the crash occurred just before 1 p.m. as the cyclist was riding southbound on Topping and collided with the side of a semi-truck that was heading east on St. John Ave. The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported, and the investigation remains ongoing. This intersection is signal-controlled, but authorities have not yet released information about the status of the traffic light at the time of the crash. That fact alone makes it especially important to hold off on assumptions and focus on the evidence needed to determine how the collision occurred. Who Had Right-of-Way? With the semi-truck traveling on St. John Avenue and the bicyclist crossing from Topping Avenue, investigators will need to determine which direction had the right-of-way. That hinges on whether…

  • jnylaw.com language

In the early hours of May 16, 2025, a woman was struck and killed while crossing Florence Avenue at Towne Avenue. The car – a dark-colored Dodge sedan – launched her body onto the street and fled the scene westbound, toward the 110 Freeway. The driver never stopped to call for help.  The LAPD is calling it what it is: a felony hit-and-run. For the woman’s family, the legal terminology means little right now. What matters most is the loss and the silence that followed.  “The worst part of a hit-and-run isn’t always the impact,” says J&Y Senior Trial Attorney Alex Boris. “It’s what happens after. The silence and unanswered questions as well as the aching feeling that someone out there thinks they can just drive away from a human life.”  Is fleeing the scene a criminal act? Absolutely. In California, Vehicle Code 20001 makes it a felony to leave the scene of an accident that causes injury or death.…

Megan Donaldson, University College London Faculty of Laws, is publishing Law, Legal Expertise and the Peaceful Settlement of Disputes: Revisiting early League Council practice in the Cambridge Handbook on the League of Nations and International Law (Rasmussen, Ikonomou & van Leeuwen (eds), forthcoming). Here is the abstract. Through a new account of three early disputes, this chapter revisits the novel role of the League Council in interstate dispute settlement. This role was delimited by a legal threshold: the question of whether disputes arose out of a matter purely within a state party's national jurisdiction or domaine reservé. Application of this test, nominally left to the Council, prompted considerable experimentation with institutional forms, and particularly recourse to 'committees of jurists', an understudied, flexible and protean mechanism which would go on to be deployed in many spheres of League activity. Drawing on contemporaneous legal…
